Page Rank No Longer Important?

So the big news today is that Google is further distancing itself from page rank as a major ranking factor. For reference, see http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2009/10/15/google-ditches-pagerank-in-webmaster-tools .

While that may be true, I still think that knowing a site's page rank is useful. Page rank is mainly about links in to the site. If the links are set up correctly, this will still give a pretty good indication of how hard it will be to compete against that site.

This does go to show that random links may not be as valuable as previously thought, and the link text in each link should be carefully considered. SEO pro's have known this all along, so this should just be a reinforcement of what we already knew.

My first SEO project has now reached the number one spot in Google. It seems that all the hard work that went into this campaign has finally paid off. I was sitting at the number 2 spot for "Belleville IL Photographer" for probably 6 months. I just couldn't seem to get the top position. Today when I woke up, I checked where I was coming up, and found that I had reached the top.

With the primary goal being met for the site, I'll be moving on to my secondary goal - St Louis Wedding Photographer . I'm excited to see how high I can get the site there because we're not located in St Louis. It will definitely be a challenge. I'm thinking about trying a different route - maybe getting a blog post or video high for that search term. We'll see.
